Philosophy of Practice

Everyone comes out of balance from time to time. Like a musical instrument that needs to be tuned daily to sound its best, or a bicycle that's not running as well as it once did, we as humans are subject to falling out of alignment too. Just like a bike or an instrument, we sometimes need a bit of maintenance to bring ourselves to a more optimal state of being.

From this lense, therapy or couseling can be seen as a means of bringing ourselves, our families, or our children, back into alignment. Working with Carolyn is like going in for a tune-up, allowng us to address inter (or inner) personal issues that naturally arise from time to time.

The process of therapy is unique to every individual, which is why Carolyn does not believe in a "one size fits all" approach. Not everyone needs to be in therapy all their lives, and sometimes a few sessions is all that's required to get back on track. Having worked with countless clients of all ages, Carolyn has learned to let dialogue reveal the important issues that need to be addressed. This can only be achieved through trust, and great patience, and Carolyn excells at letting her clients feel at ease to reveal their inner world.

During the first visit with a new client, Carolyn always encourages them to fill out their paperwork together in the office. This gets the conversation going, while demystifying the process of getting started with counseling.

Work With Children

As a school counselor, Carolyn has specialized experience working with a vast array of children, particularly those with learning disabilities. These children have unique issues that require special attention and care.

When a person has learning disabilities, there is often a social-emotional component that goes along with it. This can sometimes be associated with disability. Sometimes it can be associated with the level of trauma prior to diagnoses. Carolyn works hard to let students feel at ease so they can open up to her, as well as teaching students to be advocates for themselves while living with their unique challenges.

For Parents

As a parent, we sometimes view our child as having fallen out of step with themselves or the family. When our child has come out of alignment, it can be challenging to think about sending your kid to therapy.

Carolyn understands this very well, and believes that parents must play a pivitol role in their child's counseling. Before Carolyn meets with a child for the first time, she requires an in-person conversation with the parent (or parents) about the child and the issues at hand.
